Perry is born July 25, 1968 in Chicago In Illinois, she was the child of Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback) her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. The actress did not go on to explore acting as a profession until after she had reached adulthood because her parents were worried about the detrimental consequences stress can have. Perry admitted that she wasn't confident in her acting during high school. However, she began acting to make friends in Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry started her acting career in New York after graduation, performing in minor parts on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry come back to California to work as an actress in the theater. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. In 2015, she starred with Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer-winning drama Anna Christie. It is part of the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of The Family, an ABC drama The Family in 2016. Her father played her on The ABC Drama Scandal. In the same year, her character was cast the younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen model of the mother's role. She got the part through an open audition despite having a connection to this character.
